The Reason I headed to Chinatown
Last Friday, we went swimming in the morning. Afterward, I asked my husband if he wanted to go to the Dodgers parade.
I expected there would be a big crowd in downtown, and honestly, I wanted to see that! 😂 (Even though I’m not a huge baseball fan.)
But at the same time, I felt a bit nervous about being in such a crowd since I’m pregnant.
So, I came up with an idea: we could just pass by the area and head to Chinatown for lunch instead.
And wow, it was exciting to see the sea of blue Dodgers fans everywhere! The streets were packed with people wearing blue shirts.
After that, we went to Chinatown and had dim sum at Golden Dragon Restaurant—my go-to spot whenever I’m craving dim sum.
With full stomachs, we started looking for a bakery for dessert. There were several with great reviews right in front of the restaurant, and we decided on Phoenix Bakery. What’s the specialty of the Chinatown bakery?!
We ended up picking out a lot of pastries! Here’s my review of that delicious experience. 😋
Los Angeles Chinatown Bakery, Phoenix
Phoenix Slice Cakes

Slice cake price is not that expensive from $5.25 to $6.25. I’ve never seen Custard Napoleon before so I wanted to try that.

There are some whole cakes and tarts. They make it customized as well.

A long time ago, when I visited here first time, I tried only a slice of strawberry cake. With my little baby and husband, I can eat more! Look at the pastries waiting for me.😍
We don’t have something like cheese roll in Korean bakery but it’s easy to find it in Los Angeles. I love it.
Cheese Rolls — Plain, Blueberry, Guava

We took out pastries and cakes and got home to taste right away.
Cheese rolls first!

I noticed that they use big sugar crystals on pastries here, which I found interesting.

Hmm, I preferred the plain cheese roll.🤔
The other flavor fillings didn’t impress me; they just weren’t my taste.
Cinnamon Rolls

Cinnamon roll was pretty good—moist and dense. And ya, it was definitely sweet, with lots of melted sugar on top.
I made cinnamon roll bread at home before, here’s the recipe.

Cakes — Custard Napoleon, Strawberry Cake

The reason we went out was to get a change of pace since we spend most of our time at home cooking and rarely eat out.
Also, the reason we went to the bakery was to buy some cakes.
I knew we could’t finish a whole cake so slice cakes were enough.
And the best one in chinatown bakery, Phoenix was Custard Napoleon. Custard Napoleon is a type of mille-feuille.
The custard cream was fresh and cool like an ice cream. The layers of the cake was a little hard like a cracker but that was good.
Hard to cut the cake though.😅
Strawberry cake was just okay, not that impressive. I recommend the custard Napoleon more.😊
That’s all for today. Thanks for reading!
