Fabric Shopping for a Baby
Before I came back to LA, I’d been exploring baby fabrics and I’m totally hooked on sucker fabric.
It’s a type of gauze fabric, and it feels so soft and gentle.
Depending on whether it’s double or triple-layered, it can be used for things like handkerchiefs, baby bibs, or other baby items.
Baby Bibs Pattern
The pattern isn’t difficult.
There are plenty of patterns floating around on the internet, so you can just roughly trace one and adapt it.
See other websites for the patterns.
Just make sure the widest part of the neck is at least 8cm (3½ inch)! Somewhere between 8 and 10 cm (3½~4 inch)is ideal.
I couldn’t find an A4 paper, so I quickly drew out the pattern on the back of a music sheet.😂
The seam allowance is 1cm(1/4 inch). If it’s too thick, it’s hard to flip through the opening, and the edges of the bib become too bulky, making it look less neat.
If the seam allowance is too small, the fabric can tear more easily.
For the area where the snap button goes, I attached a bit of interfacing.
To be honest, the proper way would be to cut a larger piece of interfacing than I did. 😅
The outer fabric is the flamingo print, and the sucker fabric is the inner lining.
Place the two fabrics right sides together and pin them! Before pinning the neckline curve, trim the seam allowance slightly.
When sewing curves, make sure the fabric doesn’t get folded or wrinkled!
Sew around the edges, leaving about 3cm unsewn at the bottom.
You’ll use that 3cm opening to turn it right side out.
Here’s how it looks after turning it inside out.
Then, topstitch around the edges. Use a topstitch presser foot if you have one.
Finally, attach the snap buttons.
This was my first time using snap buttons and a punch, and wow… it’s amazing! ❤️
I tried it on my friend’s baby right after I made it, and it was just too cute.
My friend suggested that it would be better if the snap button was positioned more to the side rather than at the back of the neck, especially for when the baby is lying down. So, I made version 2 right away.
That will be in the next post!
By the way, I have so many baking wraps at home.
I keep finding different uses for them as packaging here and there. Haha.
